When comparing the durability of a solid surface material like Corian with granite, the chemical make-up of both becomes very important. While solid surfaces are mostly composed of acrylic resins and polyester plastics, granite contains both quartz and feldspar. Granite countertops are fabricated from Igneous rocks (from the Greek word for fire). This kind of stone forms when hot, molten rock crystallizes and solidifies. The melt originates deep within the Earth near active plate boundaries or hot spots, then rises toward the surface.
This chemical composition of granite plays a crucial role for any homeowner when a hot pot or pan is placed directly onto a surface. Corian’s melting point is a shockingly low 212 degrees Fahrenheit while Granite can withstand heat of 900 degrees and more!
However, while Granite countertops can take the heat, we do suggest the use of heating pads and trivets. Sudden changes in heat do have a chance of slightly cracking the stone, but more importantly leaving an extremely hot pot on your countertop will leave the area hot! So just in case, take precautions to protect yourself and investment, but also rest assured that your countertop will be just fine if you forgot that warming pad.
